I've assembled some tips on training / fighting with one-handed spears:
Eights are Sevens - no thrust to the face.
Main thing - keep the point down --> harder for shorter people since they want to get over the shield.
NO thrusting past the head going for a shoulder shot
Use both overarm and underarm grips. Learn to switch from the "overshoulder-thrusting-down" stance to the "undershoulder-thrusting-up" stance in one smooth move.
The 2 different grips should be done confidently, as should the transition between them.
1H spear fighters can be good at one-to-one, but its benefit comes from shield wall work, so focus on using its range in the wall.
Some very good 1H spear fighters - they swivel their wrist and come in under the RH opponent weapon, around the shield.
Know the length! It's 1.8 metres maximum.
ALWAYS keep your grip in the middle third
Know where the butt end is...espescially if there is a 2nd rank....
Do not stab legs.
It is a solid fighting weapon, that has its own style. It's not a sword or a wand
In a line, use your peripheral vision to strike the warrior on your right. 2H axe men will HATE you ....
